I live in NYC and was thinking of moving to Hawai'I, but everyone tells me how expensive it is…is this true?
Nyc is expensive as well so is it all that different?
- I currently live in Honolulu, and lived in NYC (my favorite city in the world) They are very comparable in cost of living. I wouldn't think you would notice much difference except for the initial cost of moving! Good Luck to you!
- I heard it was 3x as expensive as the us costs but if u want to live there go for it!
good luck! - Well, Hawaii is really expensive, especially the housing. I would think Hawaii is more expensive to live than New York and less jobs there. But, if you don't mind having roommates or housemates, then you can find rents that are cheaper. Otherwise, most apartments would cost at least $850/mth and up… But, jobs can be hard to find there as there aren't that many jobs there…
- Just double the cost of New York. Possibly Tripple
- I think they are about the same, but I would think the job market in NYC is much better.
- Yes, Hawaii is expensive.
The cost of living is very high here. Rent for a studio apartment (when you can find one available) is $1800/mo. A gallon of milk is $8. A dozen eggs is $6. A gallon of unleaded gas (87) is $3.29 (at Costco where it's significantly lower than anywhere else). Even the dollar menu at Taco Bell is $1.59 here.
Just some examples of the cost of living here in Hawaii. I don't know how it compares to NYC. I'm sure NYC isn't cheap either.
One word of advice though……don't move here unless you already have a job lined up. The unemployment rate is VERY low here and finding a job (even a entry level) isn't that easy if you don't want to be a burger flipper at McDonalds.
Good luck!
- Yes Hawaii is expensive to live at (even groceries are expensive). The reason is because of the limited amount of land
My cousins live in New York and they say that New York can be more expensive than Hawaii (depends where you live, they live in Manhattan)
Just be mindful on how you use your money and you should be okay.
- double. Because is the paradise
The best apartments prices here:
http://www.realstateamerica.com/ciudad.p… - I think anyplace can be expensive, no matter if in Hawaii or on the mainland! Now in Hawaii, most items have to be shipped from the mainland, so that is an added expense.
But I have some friends who live on Oahu, and they are not rich by any means!
All my relatives live here on the mainland (diffrent states), but it doesn't matter where you live, just use your money wisely!! - I have been to NYC and I don't think it really is that much more expensive..
If you learn where to shop and don't pay $8.00 a gallon of milk and get it for $3.50 instead you should be fine.
I would highly recommend you either have a job already lined up or you have enough money that you're retired before moving here. Our unemployment is at an all time low and good jobs are hard to find, especially for a new comer.
Here is our newspaper link you can check the want ads for jobs & housing..Aloha & Peace
