Someone in Hawaii said it's 11.55 pm …. How can that be?
I mean, it's 11am in the UK now and since we are the custodians of world time (GMT) and all that, I took that to mean that half the world were up to 12 hours behind us and the other half were up to 12 hours ahead of us.
- It seems, however that Hawaii is 13 hours ahead of us. Is that possible? Has it something to do with the commencement of British Summer Time a few weeks ago?
- the world is split into 24 time zones, have a look at the worldtimezone link below, that should help explain it.
Some countries are 8 hours behind us and some are 4 hours ahead of us etc.
For example, France is 1 hour ahead of us but Florida is 5 hours behind us.
Some countries have 30 min differences too, for example when it is 11.20am here it is 7.50pm in Adelaide, Australia!
Have a look on http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/cu… to see times in different parts of the world.

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/cu… - Sorry, my mistake, I should know that Hawaii is behind us not ahead as they were last into the Millennium … I taped all the midnights, so that means they are -11 hours behind us.
D'uh, new question … who's the dunce of the week? Elflaeda is.
Thank you for all your kind answers though everyone.
- It's 6:20 AM on east coast right now in US. That means it's 3:20 AM in California and it could be after midnight in Hawaii. They're way out west in Pacific.
- Umm…technically, Hawaii is actually behind the UK. We're one of the last people to actually celebrate New Year's (just as an example) because we're very close to the Internation Date Line and we are to the right of it. So technically, we're behind most of the world.
And as for the time differential, the UK is 11 hours ahead of us.
- Her clock is broken, it stopped at 11.55 yesterday morning and she has only just noticed. Dozy mare.
- that is a over nighter.
- actually They are 11 hours behind us not 13 hours ahead of us. there date should be 6th of may at that time not 7th of may .
- he was toking about another place
- Obviously the folk in Hawaii are using the Americanised version of the Australian clock - otherwise known as the Amozclock. This apparently is read while standing on your head and calculating the difference between the distance from and to the international date line and the daylight saving hours taken away and added to the day before or after the time calculations are being made.
Yes, I know this all sounds complicated, but there you have it.
- Your friend in Hawaii looked out of the window and it was dark. Therefore it was night time. He looked at his watch and the big hand was on the 11 and the little hand was almost on the 12. Therefore it was 11-55 PM. Simple. No-one is "the custodian of world time" Time goes on and has gone on and will continue to go on without any interference from people and governments, British Summer Time, Eastern Standard Time, Noddy or Mickey Mouse. The time differences between places in the world is due solely to the apparent movement of the Sun from East to West. (I don't want to confuse you by mentioning that the Sun doesn't move it is the Earth that moves)
- It is 12:07 AM as I am writing this, so they are not wrong. We are -10 hours on the GTM.
- u probably mean, 13 hours late. yes, you are right that half the world is 12 hours advance and half is 12 hours late. However, US has daylight saving time where they advance their clocks an hour ahead, and that is applicable as of the time. that makes it 13 hours, instead of 12 hours.
