I'm 16 and I live in new york city, but I'm going to Hawaii later this summer and I was wondering what are some places to surf/learn how to surf?
- oh yeah, any needed preparation to condition a body to surfing? such as swimming for an hour per day?
- It will help if you have some upper body strength. If you have access to a pool, swimming is great. Focus on freestyle because that's a similar arm movement that you use for surfing. If you don't have access to a pool, do push ups or other exercises that focus on your back and shoulders.
As far as surfing in Hawaii, it really depends on what island you're going to, and what side of the island you'll be staying in. If you're going to be in Waikiki, Canoe's is a good place to learn. That's where all the tourists go, out front of the Duke Statue in downtown Waikiki. You can get a board rental for about $8-10 an hour and lessons aren't much more than that. Instead of going through your hotel, it's a LOT cheaper (and sometimes better) to go through the beach boys down on the sand. Hyatt and Hilton will just over charge you and your family.
Take a lesson on one of your first days for 1-3 hours. Any more than that and your arms will feel like Jello! Then, rent a board again and go out on your own. Be careful! Don't ditch your board (hang on to it, if you let go, it could fly and hit someone else and they could get seriously hurt). And have fun!!!
- Swimming will definately help.
There is some surf instruction in Waikiki, just check the phonebook or ask at a hotel.

wheres the best place to find surfing instructors in hawaii? wheres the best place to surf in hawaii?
- I was on vacation there once and took surfing lessons around waikiki beach… the north shore has better waves though…but probably for the more advanced surfer…the north shore waves knocked me down, taking my swim suit with them lol..btw im talking about oahu
- I dont know im sorry I just wanted to know if I can go to pleasssse not an answer but can I
- Depending on which Island you are going to… there are dozens of instructors on dozens of beaches. If you are on the big island you can have the ultimate teacher. An ex world champion named Rory Russel teaches there and he has never faild to get someone standing on their first day. Check it out. He works out of Kona.
- If you are near Alamona Beach, try Alysha Surf School. Albert Mahoe is the owner and does a great job of instruction. His email is mahoe23@yahoo.com.
If you are near Waikiki Beach, there are three surf schools all next to each other right on the beach. You need to be a little careful with the coral heads in the water where they teach but there are many instructors right there to assist you.
- barbers is a pretty good beach for some waves that are not to big but not tiny. barbers is also known as white plains. some places on north shore are probably to big for beginners and also downtown like ala moana would be to big.
- Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy-get instructions from them, they're great! the best place is a place called Lahaina which is in Maui.-beginners to intermediates spot
- wakiki is one of the easiest places and there are surf instructers all around. hey the guy who said there's no surf in cali is wong. you have to get off your bum and look for it
- pipeline and backdoor is the best spot hands down if you are really good, but if ur a beginner try waikiki
- Obviously you're traveling there… Surf shops and instructors are all over the place in Hawaii.
Google one located where you intend to travel to. Where you surf will depend on where you want to go and what instructor you choose.
