Why do people say Islam oppresses women and yet the largest number of converts to Islam are women ?

In Western Democracies, Islam can't oppress women because they have equal rights. In the many Muslim theocracies around the world, however, women are undoubtedly oppressed in many ways. They can't drive in Saudi Arabia, to name one very minor example.

Islam allows women to keep their maiden name after marriage, their earned money and spend it as they wish, and ask men to be their protector as women on the street can be molested. Prophet Muhammad (P) told Muslim men, "the best among you is the one who is best to his family." Not Islam, but some Muslim men, do oppress women today. This is because of their cultural habits or their ignorance about their religion. Female Genital Mutilations has nothing to do with Islam. It is a pre Islamic African Custom, practiced by non Muslims including coptic Christians as well.

The Nation of Islam will only do to Christians what was tried to done to them. There are women who actually like to be dominated by the man. At least, they think they're going to like it. I've known girls like this. They think it's gonna be all fun and games, till somebody really gets hurt, and it's usually the woman.
I actually had one pretty young lady tell me that it was her fault that her husband beat her. She had been a bad girl. In her own words, if she weren't such a bee itch, her husband wouldn't have to beat her.
Low self esteem.

Unfortunately, in the case of women converting to Islam, once they've been swallowed up into it, they're probably not going to seek a way back out. Given the consequences for leaving Islam once you've converted, who can blame them. Sorta like the Mafia, the only way out is in a hearse.

Many people take the actions of people as the religion. I man truly practiced Islam then they would find the peace. The West sees coving as oppression, but who is the oppressed. The one who has to show her body to get a man, instead to be thought of as a brain. Or the girls in high school thought of as the “Pretty girls”. I see that is oppression. I converted to Islam 6yrs ago I have found that the religion is peaceful and joyful, never oppressed. However I do know that some of the men oppress women in the name of Islam. It is astounding. But I hope that they will be very happy. I'm sure they are fine women, earnestly following their hearts. May they be completely at ease and never separated from joy.
I would say it is because they know not how Muslims think and what they consider to be valuable traits in the opposite sex.
They go by the media portrayal of Islam and do not have a clue of the reality.

Also, what westerners do not see is that women are well treated in Islam on the whole, and we can be attracted to being FEMININE rather than competing with males all the time.

All of you who are preaching about lack of self esteem and being swallowed up and Mafia deaths blah blah blah blah are truly trying to explain what you don't understand. If western women are so respected, and I ask this honestly, not as a point of contention, why is there such a fuss over the first American woman vaguely considered to run your country?And even more telling,why do people make such a HUGE issue of a woman running the country in the first place?

Women have been running Muslim countries for a very long time. They have not been limited by gender. The beautiful Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, Khaleda Zia and Hasina Wajed of Bangladesh, Indonesia's Megawati Sukarnoputri and Tansu Çiller of Turkey. These are just the modern examples.

Women have had positions of power in the Islamic world for centuries so we do not understand all this fuss over the insult to femininity in a pink suit that the Democrats put forth as a candidate.

Might I also make this point. To all who think Muslim women are beaten down and repressed, consider this.

If you lived in another country and all you ever saw in the media were views of the types of women you see on the Springer show, you would almost be forgiven for thinking ALL American women are illiterate and classless, throw food, fight on stage, have no dignity and are involved with useless males.

You know this is not the truth in America so realize, what you see in the media about Muslim women is equally distorting and inaccurate.

Women and other oppressed groups are often susceptible to *any* form of religious preaching, since the preachers promise deliverance from the oppression.
Usually, they end up more oppressed when they join a religion, but they fool themselves into thinking it's a good thing because at least they feel accepted by a new group. Oppression breeds an "Otherness" into oppressed class, like people from oppressed groups (e.g. women, minorities, those of differing sexual orientation) are not normal. When they join a new religion, they often feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, which morphs into a sort of cognitive dissonance that allows them to ignore how crazy the new beliefs are, even if the beliefs are harmful.
