Which Hawaiian island has the nicest people, and is the most relaxing? Kauai?

  1. Kauai is the greenest. It is also the island that is the most free from tourists. I went there last summer and loved it. The people were nice there. We thought they were nicer than the people on Oahu (at least in our experience) but that might have been due to the more rural nature of the island. There is some great snorkeling on Kauai.
  2. I say that everybody from Hawaii is nice. But on Oahu there are very annoying hawaiians that think that we are taking away their land and crap like that. (they are too dumb to know that the biggest economy is tourists) I say that the big island, kona has very laid bad nice people that will not discriminate you for being white. Alot of people will call you haoli (foriegner) But nobody does on the big island.
  3. The people of Hawaii (state not island) are all nice. The island of Kauai is beautiful and green. Fewer tourist go there so the locals can better take care of their guests.
  4. Oahu - without a doubt. With the exception of Waikiki, probably the most local of lifestyles is right here. Visit some of the residential neighborhoods - shop and eat with the Kama`aina … you will see for yourself.
  5. I have found that all of the Hawaiians are nice, regardless of the island. If you want to get away from people, just don't go to Oahu. I would agree that Kauai is probably the most relaxing but I prefer Maui. It has more to do in my opinion.
  6. I live on the Island of O`ahu and the people are Very friendly here and there is more to do.
  7. They all have nice people. It depends on your definition of relaxing. Oahu and the Big Island have the most touristy stuff to do and are more crowded, Kauai and Maui are more open space and very relaxing, but Molokai is the most relaxing if you want civilization to melt away. Molokai is very "country" in that there is only one hotel (at least last time I was there), no fast food places, no movie theatres, etc. One stoplight on island but tons of gorgeous beaches!
  8. Locals in Hawaiian in general are quite nice, but Honolulu is a larger city, so even in as friendly a place in Hawaii you'll get some cranks just due to higher population.

Regarding relaxing, depends on what you're looking for. On any of the islands, with a bit of research, you can find beaches that most tourists never know about and have them largely to yourself (summer-time is a little more crowded because kids aren't in school though).

I think where you stay has a lot to do with the relaxation factor on any island. Honolulu has the most things to do probably, but if you want relaxing don't stay in Waikiki. Rent a place near Kailua beach or in Lanikai or the north shore, or Waimanalo (on the beach though) or someplace like that instead and you'll have a very different experience than staying in Waikiki's concrete jungle. In Kauai, I'm a big fan of staying in Anahola on the beach–quite secluded and less known, more local. On Maui, not as much an expert–its quite crowded on the south shore resort areas, so perhaps stay on the Hana coast somewhere.

If you're going during the summer, I'd go to Kauai because its incredibly lush and there are some gorgeous hikes there: Na Pali coast, Kokee, etc. You can snorkel with turtles at Ke'e You can kayak, windsurfing, diving, etc. It has less tourists than Maui or Oahu by far. But don't go to Kauai in the winter–very rainy. Wintertime and early spring, I'd go to Maui because its dryer in general.

  9. u should go to the big island it is so beautiful I went there on march and the good thing is that it never rains but if it does its just a little bit oh and the place is KONA
  10. I have been to both Kauai and Maui and I absolutely would visit Kauai again over Maui. Kauai is so green and its a small island with extremely friendly people. There aren't as many tourists as other islands and there are lots of things that you can do there. We went on a helicopter ride, a snuba dive, and a luau in kauai. All the other times we just relaxed on the beach and shopped at their boardwalk shops. Very relaxing.
