Is a one year old puppy too old to potty train?
because since he was a puppy, I always kept him outside. but one day I was thinking to myself that my dog should be a house dog because he's half poodle half terrier(too cute).and another reason is that he wont go into the new dog house I bought him so I either put him in the lanai or the house n e suggestions?
- No he is not too old. I just bought an Airedale from the SPCA who had been abused and never been trained. He was 2 when I bought him, and I successfully trained him within 2 months.
Remember Patience, and Scolding techniques. Do not rub the dogs face in the urine/feces. Just tell them in a loud voice "NO, BAD DOG," Grab them by the collar and put them outside. A few trips like this and the dog begins to get the message.
Also, walk your dog, and when he/she goes to the bathroom, reward with a treat, or a good rub down and speak in a soft voice saying "Good Dog, you are so great, etc."
- no not at all is a one year old puppy too old to potty train you just have to know how to train it right. whn he/she pee'srub her nose in it though not too hard just enough to let it know that thats bad and take it outside every hour to see if it will use the bathroom
- Good for you bringing in your dog. You both will be happier.
You housetrain a dog like you do a puppy. Watch them, don't let them make a mistake, take them outside and reward them as soon as they go outside. Then bring the dog in.
A great booklet for potty training is called: Way to Go, How to Housetrain a dog of Any Age, by Dr. Patricia McConnell.
- One "plus" is that he is already trained to go outdoors.
Also older dogs can hold their urine longer. Better bladder control and larger bladders.
Beyond that, the basic rules are the same:
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/housebreakin… - There are some good answers here, but if you aren't successful, you can download the e-book that I used which was a tremendous help. It answered all my questions about house training my puppy and saved me lots of frustration.
- It's not too late. Just take him straight outside when he wakes up, giving him a sort of command, and praise him with lots of love and treats when he does his business outside. Reinforcement of proper behaviour is the key.
- definitely not or else I'm in big trouble. I just got a 1 yr. old dog, and I've had her for about a week, and she's doing very well on housetraining.
- They can be trained when they are older too. Watch where he goes when he is outside and then when you walk him take him to those spots and praise him when he does his business. I would keep him crated while he is alone in the house until you are sure of his training.
- no dog is never too old to potty train.
