I'm indicisive on having my beach wedding in Maui or California. I was thinking that Maui would be a beautiful intimate place where my fiance and I could have a wedding and a honeymoon all in the same place.
- Please let me know your experience/opinion with a Maui wedding

- My daughter got married there in May 2003 and it was a fantastic experience. We all got a 12-day vacation out of it. Her photographer was incredible and worked with a planner who arranged for the leis, flowers, cake, set up chairs on the beach of choice, etc.
George picked the kids up at the airport and took them to get the license (about $60 as I recall) - He helped book a luau, a bike ride down Haleakala, snorkel tour out of Lahaina, etc for the rest of us. At discounted rates!
As mother of the bride I can tell you this was really the way to go (having had to do the rehearsal dinner / formal bridesmaids / wedding / reception thing with two other girls.) Actually ENJOYABLE instead of a stressful, hair pulling experence. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. We sent the wedding planner a photo of the cake she wanted and Leah got it exactly right. Looked like it had seashells and pearls on it but they were really speckled white chocolate…
The kids went to West Maui to a resort and we had a condo in Kihei and we would have never seen each other after the wedding except for the group activities.

That is my daughter and her husband silhouetted against the flaming red sunset; she opted for the Kihei Surfside with grass underfoot; there were whales breaching in the bay during the ceremony; we all went to Sarentos afterwards.
- Kuai or the Big Island are both much nicer than Maui.
I recomend the Princeville on Kuai or the Hilton Waikaloa on the Big Island.

- We didn't have our wedding in Maui but we did go there on our honeymoon. It was my wife's favorites of the 4 Hawaiian islands we visited.
If it were me, I'd save the money by having it in California (assuming that'd probably be less expensive) and then go to Hawaii for the honeymoon.
- Our wedding was on Kauai and was more beautiful/wonderful/fabulous than I could have ever imagined.
We have a friend that got married on Maui in February. It was VERY small, just the couple getting married and their friends (another couple). They decided to get married on the beach in the morning before it got too hot. They married in a somewhat private area of the beach but still had onlookers clapping and yelling their congratulations (she said it was cute to have strangers calling out to them). They got married 2 days after their arrival to the island and stayed a week after.
I think you can find intimate in CA too, but if you're wanting the beautiful beach, warm waters and a honeymoon - go with Maui!
Good luck and Congratulations!
