What are some organisms unique to Maui?

  1. The Haleakala Silversword only grow on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano on Maui between 6,900 and 9,800 feet.

Hyposmocoma molluscivora is a species of moth whose caterpillar stage is known for catching and eating snails.

Po'o-uli is a bird species that lives on the north-eastern slopes of Haleakala. It is currently believed that there are, at most, two of these birds left and they have not been seen for over a year.

There is a second breed of carnivorous caterpillar that lives on Maui, a species of Eupithecia moths, although this one captures prey that is much more active than snails. It sits on a leaf with its head and front end arched backwards. When an insect wanders too close, it rapidly snaps forward and grabs the insect with its sharp front feet. It then devours its victim at leisure.

  4. The fern genus Adenophorus is endemic to Maui.
The native violet Viola maviensis and two varieties of Viola chamissoniana are also endemic to Maui.
Maui endemic honeycreeper (a bird) Melamprosops phaeosoma
Maui also hosts several endemic native bees (Hylaeus spp.), land snails, wasps (Odynerus spp. &
Ectemnius spp.) and endemic anchialine amphipods.
