Many tourist visit places to play golf, tennis, relax at a resort that does not resemble old Hawaii. But the Hawaiian of old polynesia like to go to beaches to surf, drink, and party etc. If I was to live on Oahu for a year, tempoary job assignment, where can I experience a more polynesian type community/atmosphere? One place suggested to me was Kaneohe. Another is Makaha.

1. Haleiwa up on the north shore. It's low key, receptive (outsider friendly), surfing town, pardon the cliche: "away from the maddening crowd", two roads in; two roads out, combination Haight Ashbury - Greenwich Village, with a smattering of upscale homes, lodging and ono places to eat.
   Makaha is also good, but keep a hand on your wallet/purse at all times. Don't leave your car parked in the same spot for more than two days - the tires (if not the car) will be gone on the 3rd day.
   Kaneohe is good; lotsa miliary. Three busy golf courses are nearby.
   La'ie and Kahuku is very old style but fitting in with the natives might be difficult for you (you haole by any chance?) La'ie and Kahuku da kine Samoan fellas and Hawaiian kane lai dat, so you behave or else bust foa okole!
   Anyway 'nuff said.
   My recommendation for you (an if you haole): Haleiwa.
   Hang loose brah! I looki foa you bustin da dive at Sunset Beach hanging 10 on a 40 footer!
